Welcome to School of Performing Arts

The Department of Fine Arts and Aesthetics, established under the School of Performing Arts at Madurai Kamaraj University, is dedicated to the study, preservation, promotion, and dissemination of visual arts, aesthetics, folk arts, and cultural heritage. The School of Performing Arts, established in 2002, comprises the Department of Fine Arts and Aesthetics and the Department of Folklore and Culture Studies, making Madurai Kamaraj University one of the few universities in Tamil Nadu to have a distinct academic school devoted to the integrated study of the performing arts, visual arts, folklore, and cultural heritage. The Department adopts an interdisciplinary academic approach that integrates Fine Arts,Aesthetics, Folklore, Cultural Studies, Heritage Studies, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems(IKS). Its curriculum is designed to foster critical inquiry, creative practice, research competence, and community engagement. Through an appropriate balance of theoretical knowledge and practical training, the Department enables students to appreciate both traditional andcontemporary artistic expressions while developing analytical, creative, and research-orientedperspectives on visual culture, indigenous artistic traditions, and community-based arts. Research constitutes one of the Department's core strengths. Faculty members undertake interdisciplinary research in areas including folk arts, tribal art traditions, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, visual anthropology, cultural heritage documentation, art education, visual culture, and community engagement. The Department has successfully secured research funding from both State and national funding agencies. Notable initiatives include a Government of Tamil Nadu-funded project on the collection and documentation of folk songs, contributing significantly to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage, and an Indian Council of Social Science Research(ICSSR)-sponsored project titled Documenting Kurumba Traditional Art Forms. The Department has also implemented an MKU-RUSA-supported project, Developing Entrepreneurial Skills to Traditional Craftsmanship: With Special Reference to Palmyra Palm Leaf Arts, which has promoted entrepreneurship, skill development, product innovation, and sustainable livelihood opportunities among traditional artisans. The Department maintains active collaborations with artists, artisans, cultural practitioners, educational institutions, research organizations, and government agencies through seminars, conferences, workshops, exhibitions, field-based studies, collaborative research projects, and extension programmes. These initiatives provide students and scholars with experiential learning opportunities, strengthen university–community engagement, facilitate knowledge exchange, and reinforce the Department's commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage, academic excellence, interdisciplinary research, and socially responsive education.
